HISTORY Dr. Irene Palmer, founding dean of USD School of Nursing, made a formal attempt to develop an honor society in 1978. Dr. Evelyn Sobol, faculty member and Carol Anderson, senior student, worked to establish a local chapter. A steering committee established by-laws, eligibility requirements and plans for a research conference. The President of Sigma Theta Tau, Sister Rosemary Donnelly discussed with Point Loma Nazarene College the possibility of a Chapter-at-Large, but USD made the decision to establish a separate chapter. In April 1979 the first executive board of USDs Honor Society was created with the first newsletter being sent the same year. The Research Conference was held in 1980 with speakers Martha Rogers in 1980 and Virginia Henderson in 1981. The application for chartering as a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau was approved in November 1980. After four years of intensive effort, chartering for Zeta Mu took place on May 7, 1982. On September 15, 1992 the application for a Chapter-at-Large chapter was filed with an evaluation visit on January 19th and 20th, 1993. Zeta Mu was rechartered Zeta Mu Chapter-at-large on May 22, 1993. Visit Sigma Theta Tau International's web site for more information about the purpose and history of the honor society.
